Hey all, sorry for the wall of text as a first post, here's a **Bored of getting smashed by the broken mission 15 in version 1.2. Any chance of a working cheat to get around it and back to the fun?** I hesitate to bring up the subject of cheats because a glance at some of the other threads indicates that a lot of you are hardcore strategists that frown on such cowardly shenanigans. That's fine, direct your scorn at me as you see fit. I would like some help too though, if possible. I only played the demo of the original Stronghold but loved it, so I jumped at the chance to pick up the whole collection on Steam sale recently. That means I have v. 1.2 which, unfortunately, means the crazy-hard version of mission 15 (Carve a Path). The leap in difficulty seems pretty game-breaking to me, frankly, and reading the various walkthroughs suggests that the only way to win is through exploits. Being finnicky with arrow range (which doesn't even appear to work post-patch) or tunnelling in past the NE corner of the moat, without ever actually using the ram as the game itself suggests. Frustratingly, I can't even seem to manage it with the suggested strategies, even on easy. Yeah, I know. Point is, I don't even like the assault missions much. They're an intermission at best, cause the real fun for me are the defense and economics aspects. I really can't be bothered to slog through this bottleneck again and again just so I can access a few later missions and wring some more fun out of this old title. So before I chuck it in completely and start playing the sequels, does anybody know of any cheats that might help expedite things? Any help appreciated, thanks muchly.

You don't have to cheat, and you may have to do a little more work than shown here (pikemen will probably attack your ram), but it's doable:

Thanks for the link. I've tried that though, and it doesn't work for me. I don't know what sort of sorcery he applied to that ram, but there's no way all those enemies would have just stood around and let it do its thing unmolested. I can't even clear that first tower of archers, those flaming arrows simply make mincemeat of my marksmen while they're busy shooting the stone wall and the ground in front of them. Off to Stronghold 2 for me, I think.

To address your initial question, I don't know of any cheats for Stronghold unfortunately. And yes I agree, this mission is absurdly difficult.
What I can say is that I've beat it on very hard, but it takes a lot of time with speed kept at the minimum setting and a lot of saving. I have a large number of files dedicated to this level alone.
Although I don't have cheats, I can give you some general hints at least. You have to distract the archers on the wall by running yours back and forth on the lowest game speed while you fill the moat. It takes an absurd amount of patience. Dig the moat on the left side of the castle and knock down the tower on that side that connects the two parts of the castle and you'll have access to the whole place. I'm not sure if that's the Northeast side of the castle that people are talking about, but the left side is where I broke in. The main thing really is just the patience, although, yeah, it's really frustrating > I suppose that if you like I could just send you a save file where the level is almost done. That might work. EDIT: After looking at those save files, I apparently broke in through the front. Regardless, I have the perfect save file for you if you'd like it. -DOOMBRINGER- "DOOMBRINGER, make a parking space IMMEDIATELY!" Dig the moat in front of the gate house, then remove your engineers from the ram and command the ram to attack the gate house. The enemy archers won't shoot at the ram anymore as it doesn't have any engineers in it.
I know this is a bug exploit but I will state that for the record this mission can be done without exploits and I did so on my first play through of the campaign.

Wonderful, thanks to the both of you.
The ram can still move and attack without its engineers? Truly, this game is full of surprises :P
I may give that a shot, but if you could toss me your save file, Timballisto, I'd be enormously grateful. Maybe upload it to MediaFire or similar, if you could, and post a link here for the use of others with the same frustration?

Here's the file. You'll have to rename it from .txt to .sav. I don't know why, but I couldn't download it with a .sav extension. Happy trails! -DOOMBRINGER- "DOOMBRINGER, make a parking space IMMEDIATELY!"

You, sir or madam, are a legend. Now to work out how I go about using this. I shall report back with further gratitude if I manage it.
EDIT: Ok no, I'm stumped. Excuse my ignorance, but the link doesn't lead anywhere and trying to save it doesn't seem to work either. What am I missing?

It doesn't? Ugh. Okay, I will see if I can't work this out. Failing that I could just upload it here like you mentioned earlier. I'll let you know what happens either way.
What actually happens when you try to download it? Do you get a blank browser window? A 404 error page? Something else?

Better send it via mail. We don't want any other players be tented to play by "shortcuts", if you know what I mean.
jamoseke, welcome to SHH. I've been watching your thread. Your situation is similar to many players across the world. If you find using cheats fun, then you missed having a good hard win for a long time, because that's the ultimate gaming feeling and no cheat can fake that.
Just keep it in mind as a friendly advice: You can cheat games, but it won't help life. Improve your gaming attitude by avoiding cheats, and you will become more confident in everyday life. The secret of success is: Try something and if it doesn't work then change your perspective. Works every time.
Have a good stay and enjoy Stronghold

Well, clicking the link gets me a "Oops! Google Chrome could not find the page" error.
Right-clicking it and hitting "save link as" results in downloading a blank txt file, unless I change the extension to .sav as you suggested. I tried putting the .sav file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold\saves
Which I assume is where it goes. I can't find it when loading saves within the game though, I only have a single save in my list, and it seems to be one of mine. I haven't mucked about with save files much in the past though, could be I'm missing something obvious.
Thanks for the welcome and the advice, Lord_of_Hell, but I hope you won't think less of me if I respectfully disregard it. This is a game, and a broken one at that. In the circumstances, I think of a cheat or a handy save file that fixes a broken mission as a helpful patch, and I can't see any harm in granting others access to it.
Anyone who values honour more than fun is welcome to do it the hard way, and I wish them godspeed. For myself, I can only watch my archers fire directly into the ground for so long. I haven't noticed my failure to complete Stronghold crippling my confidence or daily life as of yet, but I'll let you know if I should crack under the strain

Quoted from jamoseke: Before I sent you the above link, I took the time to play the scenario (ver. 1.3), almost as presented by the video. This, so I wouldn't waste your time with yet another video with an impossible (at least in newer versions) approach. I won in my first try, and I don't consider myself a good Stronghold player. As in the video, it's possible to clear the towers - one by one - with your archers/x-bowmen, if you position them right. You may need a few (or many) tries to get it right, but don't blame the game if you can't. What you shouldn't do (compared to the video), is trying to clear the last tower with your remaining archers and x-bowmen. Instead you should pull them into the outer court (once the first tower is down), and then onto the tower with the remaining enemy x-bowmen. While doing this, your archers/x-bowmen will attract missile fire, while your laddermen get to the inner wall. Then let your spear-/macemen climb the inner wall and open the inner gate. Now it's just "mopping up". Korsfarer Mogens
Broken mission? Broken game? I don't care if you use that save file, but please don't blame the game for your inability to play/win the scenario!

Thanks, but I'm not going to be replaying this over and over, like I said. I'm sick of the mission and I'd like a way to get past it, that's all.

Thanks again, you've saved me a ton of hassle Anyone in my same predicament can download the selfsame save file This isn't an encouragement to cheat, merely an alternative to giving up for those as frustrated as I was.

Well, this thread contains several tips and links to walkthroughs from kind and knowledgeable players such as yourself. I'm afraid I'm hardly in a position to post one myself, but there are a sticky and several other threads on the subject. All in all I'd say this thread is a pretty good resource for those stuck on this mission.
I don't really see why one avenue of help should be censored in favour of another (I take the view that how people choose to derive fun from their single-player games is up to the individual) but it is of course your forum to moderate and not mine. I thank you for leaving my link intact.
